Mastering the Elements of Athletic Coaching Certificate Program

Improve Your Coaching Skills or Prepare to Become an Athletic Coach

This professional development set of courses is designed to help coaches and teachers become more successful in directing athlete students. The Mastering the Elements of Athletic Coaching certificate program will provide you with the experiences and opportunities to develop basic coaching skills and also direct students and athletes toward a positive and rewarding life experience. Students and athletes will benefit both in the classroom and in competitive sports.  You can take these courses individually or you can take them to complete the certificate program.

You will learn to:

  • Place student well-being above winning, as a coach
  • Examine and develop a solid coaching philosophy
  • Use effective communication skills in coaching athletes
  • Effectively motivate the student athlete
  • Determine and minimize the risks associated with coaching student athletes
Instructors:
Richard Bach
, M.A. in Physical Education, has taught and coached for the last 50 years. He has participated, coached and officiated in a wide variety of sports which includes:  three baseball all-conference nominations; all American baseball honors from the N.A.I.A. and assisting two national football championship teams at Sacramento City College.  He has experience as a department head and with developing a state granted voluntary integration program for secondary schools.  He has developed and written courses for athletic coaching and strongly believes athlete's first and winning second.

Ernest Shaffer, M.A. in Education, is a career educator, who over the past 50 years has taught, coached and administered classes for grades kindergarten through college.  He has developed and written courses for leisure time living and athletic coaching.  He has played, coached and officiated a wide variety of sports over the past 60 years.  He is a man who strongly believes the student athlete's well being should come above winning.

Required Materials: Successful Coaching, 3rd edition, by Rainer Martens, available in local bookstores or online at Amazon.com.

Certificate:
The University of San Diego's Division of Professional and Continuing Education will award a Mastering the Elements of Athletic Coaching certificate to participants who successfully complete nine courses, per the requirements in this program. Enroll as a certificate candidate with a $100 non-refundable fee, see certificate program information. Add the Mastering the Elements of Athletic Coaching Certificate Enrollment, EDU C775B, to your cart and then also enroll in courses. Complete 9 units total to earn a certificate: all seven 1-unit required core courses (EDU X776B, EDU X777B, EDU X778B, EDU X779B, EDU X780B, EDU X781B, and EDU X782B); and then add two elective 1-unit courses listed below.

Who Should Attend: All new and experienced coaches and/or teachers that coach or plan to, will benefit from this program of study.

Course Format: All courses are delivered in the Independent self-paced format.
