Curriculum Design for 2001/2002

This class will give teachers time, motivation and opportunity to design and prepare curriculum and materials for the coming year. There will be
an organizational meeting on the first day, followed by planned and logged work time to be spent independently in classrooms, media centers,
community locations, or other sites to be determined. Each teacher will prepare a significant addition to the existing classroom curriculum. A final session will be held to assess your product.

Writing for Primary Children

The goal of this class is to provide practical ideas that you will begin using at the end of the class week. You'll also be provided with the supporting philosophy and management strategies. Topics include: getting started, strategies that lead to students working independently, Independent Language Arts Centers, Language Arts Center models, using a Word Wall effectively, and Writers' Workshop.

Conference Description:
The Autism Institute presents national and international experts to talk about personalized supports and instruction for children, adolescents and adults with learning, sensory, and movement differences. Real supports start with understanding the true nature of each individual and the teaching, social, and fun accommodations to support communication, learning, and relationships. Come join us for a truly unique experience!
*This conference can also be part of a 1,2, or 3-unit Undergraduate or Graduate Course offered through the USD School of Leadership and Education Sciences. Art In Public Places

Making Everyday Places into Extraordinary Spaces! Art in Public Places is a nationally recognized art program that brings the community and the artist together in an effort to uplift the public as they go about their daily lives. Through this class the teacher will be introduced to many of the 600 plus works of art (by locally, nationally and internationally known artists) that are placed through the Sacramento area for public viewing and appreciation. The student will also be introduced to the Art in Public Places Education Director who will help to relate the experience with their classroom.

Step Above the Standards Workshop

Teachers need to make the basic material relevant for their diverse population and to also develop rigor and challenge. Professional development, collaboration with colleagues, and continued practice can help teachers meet the daily demands of their profession. This course will provide the guidance to meet these goals

Communication Lab for Teachers

You will learn a curriculum for teaching communications skills necessary to improve your students' academic and social functioning, as well as giving them important job skills. The program is meant to be used by school staff as a reference point throughout the school year when dealing with student relationships, discipline and student self-improvement. Through the topics covered you will learn an interactive intervention that can be used for kindergarten through high school students.

Classroom Improvements Through Successful Techniques

There are many, many, negatively power-oriented children in our classrooms. Structuring the classroom management system through the use of choices, empowering children in positive ways and working with classroom meetings will be a major part of the course. Class participants will be exposed to research and literature supporting theories presented in class.

Making Connections

Making Connections is a workshop for teachers that is designed to provide collegial sharing of lessons and strategies for implementation and new approaches to teaching to state standards. Teachers will have the choice to work independently or in teams to create grade level/subject area materials. Ideas regarding parent conferences, report cards and classroom management will also be shared. Teachers are encouraged to bring necessary materials to class and a willingness to trade ideas with others.

Enhancing the Teaching Profession

Presenters in this course will address issues which are vital for effective classrooms. California Teaching Standards will be addressed as well as key factors affecting students. Teachers should increase their current level of expertise and experience growth in their profession.
Register on-line or at the registration sessions listed below. The first class meeting will be held from 6 - 9:15 pm, after the registration session. Classes will be held for a total of eight weeks from 6 - 9:15 pm, plus two all-day Saturday sessions (dates to be determined).
