Digital Literacy for Teachers and Leaders - EDU 777I 2012 90

2.0 Semester Units

A Fully Online Course

Digital Literacy for Teachers and Leaders is the first course in the four-course Mobile Technology Learning Certificate Program, which focuses on the use of emerging technologies to promote student learning in our schools.

Shift your role of teacher from knowledge giver to knowledge facilitator using mobile devices, in this first course that provides you with an introduction to mobile devices (e.g., iPads, iPods, smart phones, etc.) and pedagogically useful online resources. Obtain basic levels of digital literacy skills and establish a shared understanding for the technical language of the mobile device field.  Understand and articulate research surrounding both the technical and pedagogical aspects of a variety of mobile technologies.  Understand the capabilities and limits of mobile devices.

You will learn how to …

  • Access, analyze and evaluate online content and resources
  • Use digital tools for formative student assessments
  • Understand the infrastructure and technical expertise to support and implement a BYOD (bring your own devise) classroom
  • Select and use grade level and age-appropriate content, including issues of access

A final capstone project has you create, implement and assess a lesson that engages your students in exploring content that requires the use of mobile technology.

The University of San Diego's Division of Professional and Continuing Education will award a Mobile Technology Learning certificate to participants who successfully complete all four courses in this program. Additional non-refundable certificate program application fee applies (see Certificate Information and Requirements).

Developing Mobile Technology Skills in Teaching and Learning

  • Employ a variety of tools for data analysis, collaboration, communication and co-creation of content
  • Develop capacity to deploy and manage all aspects of mobile technology

This course is a scheduled online course led by a facilitator. Taking an online course is convenient, fun, and allows you to structure your learning to your own learning style. Take the time you need to read, ponder, and compose responses. Dress as you like. Work any time, 24/7, at your convenience. No driving. No parking. Eating is optional. Online learning is a great way to add time to your life!

  • Assignments are posted weekly and are normally due one week later
  • You can go online when convenient during each week
  • Regular interactions with the facilitator and other students is an integral part of the class
