The Galapagos Islands Experience - EDU 598BW 0612 56

3.0 Semester Units

Have you ever wanted to visit a place that is like no other in the world and that holds a prominent place in history? Then this class may be just what you are looking for. USD, in collaboration with Galapagos National Park guides, will lead you on a tour of the Galapagos Islands. You will enjoy the beauty and excitement of seeing some of the world’s most unique flora, fauna and geology. Learn from the experts and travel along some of the same paths as Darwin while on his revolutionary expedition. You will participate in guided discussions, create and receive resource materials that will provide a background for independent research, and ideas for planning exciting and engaging curriculum. This course is open to all K - Community College instructors (and their companions).

accommodations and travel within Ecuador are paid separately from course tuition. They include hotel lodging, most meals, round trip airfare from Guayaquil, Ecuador to San Cristobal, Galapagos, boat travel between islands and all ground transportation. Participants will provide their own transportation to/from Guayaquil, Ecuador.  The course begins and ends in Guayaquil, Ecuador - starting June 21, ending July 1, 2012.  Enrollment is limited to 14 participants.

By the end of the course the participants will have had the opportunity to research and experience outside resources that can enhance their educational program and add to their knowledge and skills.

Participants will have:

  • created and implemented plans that use unique resources and experiences as an addition to their educational program.
  • participated in using experiential activities as support in the learning process .
  • develop a clear understanding and first-hand appreciation of bio-diversity.
  • a better understanding of how their current program aligns with Local, District, Site Council or State Teaching Standards.
  • added a unique base of knowledge and skills as educator
  • integrated environmental resources and experiences into their students' learning.
  • have a solid understanding of the delicate balance of nature and human impact on natural systems.
