This course assumes the student has already had a basic class in computer skills. The course consists of 10 lessons, each lesson aligned to meet specific Level II Technology requirements for the Professional Clear Credential in the State of California.

Please note that this is not an online class, although you will need an e-mail account and access to the Internet in order to complete several lessons.

Lessons cover the following topics:

  • Databases and spreadsheets
  • Webpage and Presentation tools
  • Common technology tools used to assess student learning
  • Inquiry based learning using online tools
  • Online communication tools:  email, websites, blogs, listservs and newsgroups
  • Online A/V resources
  • Collaboration with staff to incorporate technology into the curriculum
  • Current research on the use of technology in education
  • Awareness of site based technology planning including short and long-term planning

By the end of the course, participants will have had opportunity to demonstrate how their knowledge and skills in computer technology has enhanced their educational progress.

Participants will have demonstrated how to:

  • Use a computer application to manipulate and analyze data (e.g. create, use and report from a database and create charts and reports from a spreadsheet).
  • Communicate through a variety of electronic media (e.g. presentation incorporating images and sound, web pages, and portfolios).
  • Interact and collaborate with others using computer-based collaborative tools.
  • Access and use online communication tools such as email, webpages, blogs and listservs to support curriculum development.
  • Show knowledge of online Inquiry Based Learning tools such as WebQuests.
  • Show knowledge of how to use online A/V resources to support curriculum development .
  • Use technology as a tool for assessing students learning and for providing feedback to students and their parents.
  • Show evidence of how to collaborate with other teachers, mentors, librarians, resource specialists and other experts to support  technology-enhanced curriculum.
  • Show evidence of knowledge of a site-based or district technology planning regarding the use of technology and acquisition of technological resources.

USD Division of Continuing Education Clear Credential Classes have been approved by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Teachers are advised to gain prior approval from the college or university which issued their preliminary teaching credential for USD credit acceptability.

HOW DO I RECEIVE MY COURSE INSTRUCTIONS?

After registering for courses, allow 48 business hours and then your course instructions will be available through this website.  Log in to our website by using your e-mail address and password.  Go to MY ACCOUNT and the course instructions will be there for you to download and print.  Please allow 48 business hours for this access.  Upon completion, course work is mailed to the instructor for evaluation.

This is one of two independent study courses that can fulfill the Computer Competency requirement for clearing a Ryan credential. Each independent study course, which you can register for at anytime, is designed to take approximately 45 hours to complete.

Developed by a teacher, for teachers, these courses provide you with the maximum in flexibility for meeting credentialing requirements or for obtaining Professional Growth credit.

Upon registering, you can access course instructions through your USD account on our website to download and print off. Please allow 48 business hours after registering for e-mailed instructions to gain this access. Upon completion, coursework is mailed to the instructor for evaluation.

Which course do I need---EDU 580A1 or EDU 580AR?

I need to clear a credential issued prior to July 1, 2002 or to fulfill my Preliminary credential Technology Level I requirement.

You can use this course 580A1 - Level I.

I need to clear a credential issued after July 1, 2002.

You need to take EDU 580AR - Level II.

I am enrolled in a credentialing program and need a Level I class.

This course 580A1 can fulfill that requirement, but only with permission of your university.

I just need Professional Growth units.

For Independent Study classes, withdrawal and refund requests must be in writing, enclosed with all course work and materials in original condition (i.e. tapes, books if appropriate), and received within 30 days of enrollment.
